DESCRIPTION:At Puppy Jake Foundation\, everything we do connects back to a veteran and a dog\, and the life-changing partnership that forms between them. But the backbone to every successful service dog team is a network of committed volunteers who understand not just how our program works\, but why it matters. \nThat’s why we’re excited to offer Training Fundamentals 101\, a three-week educational series designed to introduce volunteers and supporters to the core principles of Puppy Jake’s service dog program. This course is an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of our mission\, deepen your understanding of service dogs\, and see firsthand the impact this work has on the veterans we serve. \nWhy Training Fundamentals 101 Matters\nWhether you are helping with training\, attending events\, or advocating in the community\, the knowledge you carry shapes how our mission is shared and understood. Training Fundamentals 101 was created to ensure volunteers feel confident\, informed\, and connected to the purpose behind our work. \nThis series goes beyond logistics and definitions. It tells the story of who we are\, the standards we uphold\, and the veterans whose lives are changed through service dog partnerships. \nWeek One: Puppy Jake Overview\nThe series begins with an introduction to Puppy Jake Foundation—who we are\, how we operate\, and why our work is so important. Participants will learn about Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and the rigorous standards that guide our program. This session also covers service dog laws\, providing clarity on the rights of veterans and their service dogs\, as well as the responsibilities that come with public access. \nWeek Two: Hear From a Veteran\nThe heart of Puppy Jake Foundation is the veterans we serve. In week two\, participants will hear directly from a veteran who has experienced the impact of a service dog. This session offers an authentic look at the challenges veterans face\, the independence service dogs can restore\, and why Puppy Jake’s mission is so deeply personal. \nWeek Three: Service Dog Etiquette and Types of Working Dogs\nThe final session focuses on service dog etiquette and the differences between service dogs and other working dogs\, such as therapy dogs and emotional support animals. Understanding these distinctions helps volunteers confidently educate the public and advocate for veterans navigating everyday life with their service dogs. \nWhen and Where\nTraining Fundamentals 101 takes place on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30  p.m. at the Puppy Jake Training Facility\, located at 3101 104th St.\, Suite 2 in Urbandale. DESCRIPTION:Behind every successful service dog team is a network of dedicated volunteers who help guide dogs through the important stages of their training. From foster families to sitters and back-up handlers\, these volunteers play a vital role in preparing service dogs for the work they will eventually do alongside a veteran. \nTraining Fundamentals 201 was created to help volunteers take the next step in understanding Puppy Jake Foundation’s training approach. As the second course in our volunteer education series\, this three-week class focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to confidently handle a service dog in training. \nCompletion of Training Fundamentals 101 is required before enrolling in Training Fundamentals 201\, ensuring participants already have a foundational understanding of Puppy Jake Foundation’s mission\, program structure\, and service dog standards. \nWhether a volunteer is considering becoming a foster\, supporting as a sitter\, or assisting as a back-up handler\, Training Fundamentals 201 provides valuable insight into the training methods that guide our program and help set dogs up for success. \nWhy Training Fundamentals 201 Matters\nHandling a service dog in training involves more than simply spending time with a dog. It requires an understanding of how dogs learn\, how to communicate clearly and safely\, and how to support the training expectations that prepare dogs for public environments. \nTraining Fundamentals 201 helps volunteers build this foundation. Participants will gain practical knowledge about Puppy Jake’s training philosophy and learn how consistent handling helps service dogs develop the behaviors and reliability required for their future roles. \nBy strengthening volunteer knowledge and confidence\, the class helps ensure that every dog in the program receives clear guidance and consistent training throughout their journey. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nEach week of the series focuses on a key element of service dog training and handling. \nWeek One: How Dogs Learn – Training BasicsThe series begins with an overview of how dogs process information and learn new behaviors. Participants will explore the fundamentals of training\, including how positive reinforcement supports skill development and helps shape reliable behaviors. \nWeek Two: Dog Handling Safety – Communicating with the DogsClear communication and safe handling are essential when working with service dogs in training. This session focuses on reading canine body language\, maintaining safe interactions\, and developing handling techniques that support both the dog and the handler. \nWeek Three: Public Access TrainingService dogs must be prepared to work confidently in a wide range of public environments.
